Move-in cleaning: prepare the spaces you will use first

Moving into an empty property creates an opportunity to clean areas that will become harder to reach after furniture and boxes arrive. Start with food-storage areas, bathrooms and the floors where you will place your belongings.

The best scope depends on the condition of the property. A visibly maintained home may need a straightforward clean; a property with grease, residue or neglected appliances needs a more detailed assessment.

Set the sequence

Arrange the clean after any agreed repairs and before the main delivery when possible. Confirm possession and key access first. The cleaner needs working water, lighting and access to the rooms included in the booking.

If trades are still working, identify what they will finish and what they will clean themselves. Do not pay for a final clean while new dust or debris is still being created without understanding that another visit may be needed.

Write the interior task list

  • Kitchen counters, sink and cabinet shelves you will use for food or dishes.
  • Refrigerator and oven interiors, where specifically booked.
  • Bathroom fixtures, vanities and accessible storage.
  • Reachable door fronts, handles, switches and trim.
  • Floors, including areas where furniture will be placed.
  • Interior glass, tracks or blinds only if included in the quote.

Ask how each material will be treated. A cleaner should know which products are suitable for the actual flooring and counter surfaces; see surface care.

Keep cleaning and repairs separate

Report leaks, damaged caulking, pest evidence or persistent odours to the responsible party. A clean can improve the condition of accessible surfaces, but it does not establish that the building or appliances are free of defects.

If mould is visible, discuss the extent and moisture source before treating it as part of the routine move-in list.

Confirm the quote and handover

List the rooms, appliances, cabinet interiors and any leftover contents. Ask whether waste removal is covered and where bags may be placed. Confirm taxes, minimum charges and how extra work will be approved.

After cleaning, check the food and bathroom areas before unpacking them. Use the quality checklist and keep a record of any agreed follow-up. Compare with move-out cleaning if you also need to prepare the home you are leaving.
