Move-out cleaning: work backwards from the handover

A move-out clean prepares the property for its next occupant or inspection. Start with the condition you are required to leave it in and the actual tasks needed to reach that condition.

Understand the assumptions behind a cleaning estimate before comparing quotes.

Read the relevant handover instructions and agreement. A cleaning package does not determine tenancy obligations, guarantee a deposit outcome or replace the property’s inspection process.

Book after belongings are removed

Empty rooms make floor edges, storage and interior surfaces easier to access. Confirm that movers will be finished, utilities remain available and the cleaner can enter before the handover deadline.

If some belongings will remain, describe them. Sorting possessions, moving furniture and hauling discarded items are separate tasks unless the provider agrees otherwise.

Confirm the areas that change the price

Kitchen appliance interiors, cabinet shelves, bathroom buildup, window tracks and leftover waste can add substantial work. Identify the refrigerator, oven, range hood and other appliances by the tasks required rather than saying “all appliances”.

Ask whether walls are to be spot-cleaned or fully washed, and whether that is appropriate for the paint finish. Carpet extraction and exterior windows generally need their own scope. See carpet cleaning and window cleaning.

Separate cleaning from damage

An inspection may identify worn finishes, broken items, stains or repairs. Do not assume a cleaner can correct them within a cleaning price. Share photographs of uncertain areas and ask what improvement is realistic.

If the provider offers a return-visit policy, read the conditions: reporting deadline, evidence required, excluded issues and whether access must be available. A vague guarantee is less useful than a defined process.

Final walk-through

Check the agreed appliance and cabinet interiors while they are still empty. Inspect floors, bathrooms, sinks and the accessible areas on your task list. Confirm waste placement and that keys or access devices are returned as agreed.

Photographs can record the condition at completion. Keep them focused on the property and avoid unnecessary personal information.

Use the quote comparison guide before booking and the quality checklist at handover. The cost calculator provides a planning estimate; the provider’s written quote controls the booked scope.
